Shortly after 1 p.m., when the doors of New York City’s first casino, next to the Aqueduct racetrack in Queens, opened to the public, Kim Franklin, 45, from East New York, Brooklyn, brushed past a security guard, extended both arms to ensure that no one behind her in line could pass and broke into a jog as she approached the escalators.
“Oh, my God,” she said as the flashing lights of video slot machines came into view. “I don’t even know where to go.”
The opening came about an hour after a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Resorts World Casino New York City that included company executives and elected officials talking up the economic benefits of the South Ozone Park site — the company says it will generate up to $1.5 million a day for the state — and ended with the release of 100 doves and a trumpet rendition of the “Rocky” theme. Then the crowds that had braved the morning chill were finally allowed inside, where four escalators connected the front doors to the main casino area. Three funneled guests up to the slot machines. Only one allowed them to come back down to exit.
Though the Elvis impersonator near the entrance insisted it “felt like Vegas” when he walked inside, the facility might look out of place on Nevada’s famous Strip.
Across the street from its parking lot on Friday, residents gardened in the yards of their single-family homes, many of which were festooned with gnomes or Halloween decorations. Inside the casino, to remain in accordance with state rules that prevent human-operated table games, visitors gambled in the company of a mechanized staff. At the baccarat tables, a long robotic arm dealt the cards. Guests shot craps using two fingers and a touch screen. And a roulette game was supervised by a chesty cyber-woman who leaned forward immodestly as she spun the little white ball on a pixilated wheel.
Some touches are deliberately local. Images of the city skyline splash across the casino’s walls. Areas are named for Times Square, Fifth Avenue and Central Park. Even some of the slot machines exhibit regional flair, like “N.Y. Gold,” “Wall Street Winner,” and a “Sex and the City” themed game.
Danny Falcicchio, 65, from nearby Howard Beach, won a $2,084 jackpot on the Wall Street machine, though a technical glitch delayed his payment for more than 40 minutes.
“I can walk here,” he marveled, chuckling as he sipped a drink. “That’s dangerous.”
Ms. Franklin, who took Friday off from her job as a principal’s secretary, harbored no such reservations. As she entered the casino, she received a call from a friend seeking an early review.
“Girl, I am in the casino,” Ms. Franklin said, raising her voice with each word. “I was the first one in the building.” Within minutes, Ms. Franklin was celebrating a $4 profit at a pirate-themed penny slot machine and contemplating her first drink order.

Gaming officials predict it will be among the most popular games at the city’s first racino, which will throw opens its doors at 1 p.m.
The machines are a flashy addition to the state-of-the-art facility, which will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 a.m. every day.
Once a bettor sits down, theme music from the popular HBO series blares from the machine.
Resorts World Casino becomes New York’s first casino, thanks to robots
New York’s first casino, Resorts World Casino, is opening this weekend. And it’s all thanks to robot dealers, who help the business get around New York’s troublesome ban on non-electronic gambling.
The casino is connected to the Aqueduct racetrack in South Ozone Park, Queens, and this is key to its existence because New York state law allows electronic gambling at racetracks. So the casino is fully automated. It opens in just a few hours and is expected to be a big success among the casino-starved denizens of the city.
Not everyone is thrilled, though. Some people worry that the casino could become a magnet for undesirable behaviour. There’s no real reason to think that, though, and anyway, if you’re worried about undesirable behaviour, it might be best to not live in New York. Or the world.
Experiencing Las Vegas, in Queens
The new casino has 5,000 video terminals and electronic table games, but, in accordance with the law, no human dealers.
But the casino’s main innovation is that it is reachable by subway from the real Times Square.
It is New York City’s first casino — or racino, because it is connected to the Aqueduct racetrack in South Ozone Park, Queens — featuring 5,000 video gambling terminals and electronic table games, including craps and a popular Asian dice game known as sic bo; restaurants like Chinese dim sum and the Stage Deli; and 6,500 parking spots.
The casino, which was approved by the Legislature in 2001 only to be delayed by false starts and influence peddling, has already stirred deep divisions. Some critics say it comes perilously close to breaching constitutional limits on gambling, while others predict it will prompt a deluge of social ills, like divorce, gambling addiction or suicide.
But supporters, including the owners of the casino and legislators in Albany, say that casino gambling has been available in the metropolitan area for years, and that this casino will help keep jobs and some of that revenue in New York.
“This is an opportunity for New Yorkers to have a Vegas-like experience without having to leave the city,” said Michael Speller, the president of Resorts World Casino New York City, who started off as a blackjack dealer in his native London when he was 18.
Resorts World, owned by Genting New York, a subsidiary of the largest gambling company in England and Southeast Asia, says the casino will generate up to $1.5 million a day for the state. Also in the works are a climate-controlled bridge to the nearby Aqueduct North Conduit Avenue A train subway station and a shuttle to Kennedy International Airport.
The doors will open at 1 p.m. on Friday, and at 8 a.m. beginning Saturday. Closing time is 4 a.m. seven days a week.
Only the ground-floor portion of the complex, called the Times Square Casino, will be open on Friday. The more elegant Fifth Avenue Casino, which will open on the second floor in December, will feature the upmarket RW Prime Steakhouse, fine Chinese cuisine and an expansive outdoor terrace where diners can overlook the track where Secretariat was paraded shortly before his retirement and where Pope John Paul II said Mass in front of 75,000 people.
Another portion of the second floor is set aside for the Crockfords Casino, named after the upscale London casino also owned by Genting, designed for high-rollers and would-be Donald Trumps who will have access through a private entrance, after being delivered to Aqueduct in Champagne-stocked limousines.
The third floor, called Central Park, will have 130,000 square feet, making it the largest event space in Queens and a place for newlyweds craving a casino reception.
In recent weeks, 1,400 construction workers have been working 20 hours a day in two shifts to ensure that the casino will be ready by Friday. One week ago, the front sign said, “RESORTS WORLD ASINO NEW Y K CITY,” but the missing letters were in place by Monday.
New York authorized gambling at Aqueduct and eight other racetracks in 2001, after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center shook the state’s economy. But while the other tracks were able to install video slot machines, which now generate more than $600 million a year in revenue sharing for the state, deals for Aqueduct, considered the most profitable franchise, fell through. Last year, the state inspector general found that State Senate leaders had manipulated the process to favor a politically connected group from Queens.
After another round of bids, Genting won by offering the state a $380 million upfront fee, which it has paid.

速伯瑪冀擴充計劃推高業績20%
速伯瑪（SUPERMX，7106，主板工業股）冀望透過未來5年擴充計劃，可按年取得15至20%業績成長；同時，該公司相信，2011財政年全年淨利仍能達到1億令吉至1億2000萬令吉的目標。

此外，該公司將於美國芝加哥收購土地，以建造倉庫。「儘管很多人不看好美國的產業前景，但我們卻因此能以合理的價格，收購有關土地建造倉庫，並連結相關地區的倉庫。」
他表示，「這可提高美國市場滲透率與銷售，尤其醫療市場，並將美國經銷的銷售量翻倍。預計該倉庫於2012年第三季竣工。」
速伯瑪執行主席兼董事經理丹斯里鄭金森指出，基於該領域需求強穩，該公司認為按年可取得15至20%營收成長。
他稱，「歐洲債務危機並未影響該領域需求，同時需求甚至不減反增，全球需求或將按年增長8%至12%。」

欧盟峰会救市方案明日出炉 闭门研讨欧盟三大难题
欧盟领导人23日在比利时首都布鲁塞尔举行峰会，议题之一就是为应对欧债危机寻求全面的解决方案。不过，当天的峰会并未就此议题拿出具体成果。德法领导人在会后均表示，将力争在26日达成一个可以稳定市场情绪的解决方案。为实现这一目标，欧洲领导人们需要解决三大难题。

膠價大跌手套股起舞
隨著樹膠現貨與期貨價格今日大幅下滑，國際樹膠聯盟（International Rubber Consortium Ltd.）表示，泰國、印尼與大馬這三大生產國將持續監督，並採取相應措施限制價格下滑。
同時，在樹膠價格今日大幅下挫下，國內手套股項卻受到該消息的激勵，紛紛在午盤走高，當中十大上升榜中共有4只手套相關類股。
截至今日尾盤，東京期貨交易所的樹膠期貨價格大跌6.63%，至每公斤281.5日圓，週三閉市為301.5日圓。同時，大馬樹膠局官方膠乳價格則下滑1.96%，至每公斤799仙，並創下自去年11月3日以來的新低水平。
因此，國際樹膠聯盟首席秘書長塔瓦羅里特（YiumTavarolit）表示，該聯盟的三大生產國已開始對今日的價格下滑進行洽談，並在情況較為穩定時，作出相關的應對措施。
「無論如何，由於市場的供應與需求基本面維持不變，樹膠價格的最低售價，仍然維持在每公斤120泰銖。」塔瓦羅里特今日接受《彭博社》的電訪時表示。
速伯瑪領漲
在樹膠價格大幅下滑的趨勢下，國內手套業者今日紛紛上揚，並由速伯瑪（SUPERMX，7106，主板工業股）領漲。該股全天上揚27仙或9.15%，收在3.22令吉，為全場第二大上升股。
而在十大上升股項中，其他的手套股還包括利得股份（LATEXX，7064，主板工業股）與其憑單利得股份-WA（LATEXX-WA），以及穩大有限公 司（ADVENTA，7191，主板工業股）。至於其他的手套類股，今日同樣也取得上揚，包括手套龍頭頂級手套（TOPGLOV，7113，主板工業 股）。
同時，綜合橡膠機構（IRCB，127，主板工業股）今日也大熱走高，全天上揚4.5仙至0.20令吉，成交量高達4236萬9900股，為第三大熱門股。
